The CCIFV invites you to a conference exploring the transformation of Vietnam’s development model and the prospects for its evolution towards 2045.
The conference will examine the turning point in Vietnam’s development model, which since the Đổi Mới reforms of 1986 has been based on economic openness, integration into global value chains and strong inflows of foreign direct investment (FDI). While this model has delivered remarkable economic performance, it is now showing certain limitations: low domestic value added, insufficient productivity gains, weak R&D capacity, and difficulties in fostering a Vietnamese business sector capable of moving up the value chain. Looking towards 2045, Vietnam’s ambition to join the group of high-income countries therefore requires a “second Đổi Mới” — one that is no longer primarily economic, but institutional in nature. This would involve better coordination between the State, businesses, universities and research institutions, greater institutional autonomy, a qualitative shift in FDI, and the development of a genuine national innovation ecosystem.
To shed light on these issues, Jean-Philippe Eglinger (Inalco / Viêt Phap Strategies), who is currently preparing a study for the Research Institute on Contemporary Southeast Asia (IRASEC) on the transformations and prospects of Vietnam’s development model, will join the CCIFV as a guest speaker.
The discussion will be moderated by Rémi Nguyen, Vice-President of the CCIFV and Associate Researcher at IRASEC.
