Sustainable Development Sector Committee: Tackling plastic pollution in Vietnam

4th Sustainable Development Sector Committee Meeting

CCIFV organized its 4th Sustainable Development Sector Committee Meeting. We discussed solutions to tackle plastic pollution in Vietnam.

During this meeting, CCIFV members introduced their CSR actions in Vietnam:

  • Aden
  • Mekong Plus
  • INSEE

Then Expertise France presented public policies to reduce plastic pollution in Vietnam and more particularly the development of an EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) scheme for 5 sectors (e.g. batteries, tires, etc.) with a focus on packaging sector.

Among the 4 pilot projects, we discovered the “Plastic Alliance Project”, which aims to reduce the consumption of single-use plastic bags in supermarket in Hanoi and gradually change the behavior of consumers.

“Fishing for Litter scheme” is another pilot project that assist and encourage fishermen in Phu Yen to collect and bring back wastes found in fishing nets to waste collection points onshore and make recommendations on the mechanisms to collect and treat plastic wastes in fishing ports.

In another hand, MADE.COM presented a case study about local solutions to reduce plastic.

Key advice:

  • Educate your team first before they educate suppliers,
  • Include plastic reduction in the Annual KPIs for instance,
  • Listen your suppliers (constrains, ideas, etc.…),
  • Duplicate good practices from one supplier to the other and develop common sense.
