Cambodia has experienced two decades of strong economic growth. An average GDP growth rate of 7.7% from 1995-2017 places it as the 6th fastest growing economy in the world, and this growth is expected to continue. This trend has  profound implications for the energy sector, since growing domestic demand for electricity is encouraging considerable Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into energy production. Besides, the Government of Cambodia has established energy self-sufficiency as a key priority and has made significant progress in electrifying  the country.

In this context, renewable energy has a key role. Cambodia has some of the best solar resources in the region, due to high average irradiation rates. Consequently, solar energy is finding its feet in Cambodia - there are a few large’scale projects approved, as well as numerous household-level projects.
