International Woman's Day is a day of awareness and advocacy dedicated to the fight for women's rights. The United Nations made 8 March official in 1977. However, the origins of this day lie in the history of working class struggles and women's protests at the turn of the 20th century in North America and Europe.

On this anniversary, CCIFV joins forces with Women in Business, EuroCham’s sector committee and French Tech Vietnam, to offer an insightful roundtable discussion around the involvement of women in implementing and promoting ESG standards in corporate policies. Indeed, financial performance is no longer the only indicator of company success.  ESG values have positive effects on the world and society and can improve business performance.

According to a Deloitte survey of executives (2022), major ESG disclosure topics include diversity, equity, and inclusion (53%), greenhouse gas emissions (49%), health and safety (44%), governance practices (40%), water (38%) and energy (36%).

A study led by the International Finance Corporation (World Bank Group) (2019) points out two elements: having more women in business leadership positions leads to higher environmental, social, and governance standards, with a clear connection when women represent a critical mass of about 30 percent on company boards. The second is that companies with enhanced ESG perform better on critical metrics: stronger internal controls and management oversight, reduced risk of fraud or other ethical violations, positive workplace environment, greater stakeholder engagement, and improved reputation and brand.

Investors are also increasingly focused on gender diversity in the boardroom and in senior leadership. They understand the value in boosting the number of women in business leadership, bringing in the viewpoints of half the world’s population.

Besides, diversity leads to more dynamic discussions, to a wider range of factors taken into account in the decision-making process. The convergence of varied perspectives, experiences and backgrounds in the boardroom will stimulate more robust debates, driving richer challenge and decision making, and delivering greater value.
