Olivier ROUSSELET

Head of Territory, BNP Paribas Vietnam

Can you explain your activity in a few words?

BNP Paribas has established its presence in Vietnam with more than 100 employees and 2 branches, located in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, our bank is offering advisory, hedging and financing solutions to Corporates and Financial Institutions.

As BNP Paribas Vietnam Country Manager, I am responsible for developing the banks’ client penetration and country franchise. I am making major decisions, managing operations, risks and resources and defining the bank’s strategy in accordance with BNP Paribas global vision.

Have you already implemented a social or environmental project in your company? Or do you have a sustainable development policy?

In 2020, BNP Paribas appears for the sixth year running in the demanding ranking of the “Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations”, published every year on the occasion of the World Economic Forum opening in Davos. BNP Paribas, is classified as the 1st French bank and 3rd bank worldwide in the ranking.

BNP Paribas is committed to being an ever-more responsible company among our society, its stakeholders and towards the environment. This belief is based on an ethical vision of bank’s long term social and environmental responsibility which puts banks in a central role in providing financial resources to initiatives meeting societal issues of today. Our CSR policy is founded around 4 pillars:

  • The Economy: financing the economy in an ethical manner via investments and financing with a positive impact, ethics of the highest standard, and systematic integration/management of environmental, social and governance risks.
  • Our people: developing and engaging our people responsibility by promoting diversity and inclusion in the workplace, supporting dynamic career management and being a good place to work. In Vietnam, we are giving several training on well-being to our employees. Furthermore, we are offering our employees a compensated leave day for any they spent engaging themselves in CSR action.
  • The community: being a positive agent for change, by fighting against social exclusion and supporting human rights. Our bank is promoting a corporate philanthropy policy focused on the arts, solidarity and the environment. In Vietnam, we are supporting and partnering with several NGOs (Enfants d’Asie, Mekong Plus, SOS Children’s Village, Room to Read, Habitat for humanity …).
  • The environment: combating climate change by partnering with our clients in the transition to a low carbon economy. BNP Paribas has decided to cease all its financing related to the thermal coal sector by 2030 worldwide. For palm oil and nuclear energy industries, we have outlined policies which take into account ESG standards when making financing and investment decisions. The Group is also strengthening its support for the development of renewable energies with a new financing target of €18 billion by 2021. Internally, we are also working on banning single-use plastic in our working environment.

What type of advice would you give to other companies in Vietnam to launch such CSR project?

In order to successfully achieve such CSR projects, each company needs to use significant resources (both financial and non-financial) to lead the way towards a more sustainable future. For this reason, it is important to develop and engage our employees’ responsibility.

In Vietnam, we have set up, early 2020, a new Governance for its CSR Country Committee with volunteered Members elected by our staff. The purpose of the Vietnam CSR Committee is to support BNP Paribas Vietnam in achieving its civic responsibility goals by initiating, coordinating and implementing local initiatives and programs, promoting CSR culture among employees by their active engagement and volunteering.
