The current wide gap between the “smart city” and “sustainable city” frameworks suggests that, today, it is probably necessary to refine the concept of “smart city” to take full account of sustainability issues (in their plurality) employed in the urban setting.

This Night of Ideas programme will be an opportunity to examine how the concept of sustainability can be used in the definition of the «smart city»

How do we talk about “smart AND sustainable cities”?

How can the objectives of efficiency be discussed in the deployment of intelligent solutions serving the city and the citizen, and their impact in terms of environmental, economic or social sustainability?

For the third Night of Ideas in Vietnam, this event will feature three highlights:

  • What do we mean by Smart City?
  • Progress and limits of the Smart City
  • The Smart City in Vietnam
  • The theme “Proches” will be discussed as a red thread of exchanges: how does the “smart city” allow, in its new modes of operation and the expanded use of new technologies, connected objects, applications … , to influence individual and collective relationships to space, and more broadly, to define new relationships between the citizen and the machine, in the different aspects of daily life?

What will be the impact of digital, especially in terms of social relations, in this new way of living the city?

Ahead of the event (in the first half of January 2021), a video recording of a remote interview between Linh Nguyen Tri (IDF Major Urban Project Manager, Bouygues Immobilier) and Dominique Sellier (Urban Planner based in Oslo, Norway), moderated by Emmanuel Cerise (Researcher, representative of PRX in Hanoi) will be realized. This video will be edited and subtitled so that it can be used during the debate, and also offered at the French Institute in Paris. This event will be organized in collaboration with the French Institute in Norway.
